NorthWoods immerses players in a post-apocalyptic world, overtaken and ravaged by an alien invasion, where survival hinges on humanities final great creation: the ProxyPilot machine. This survival-horror multiplayer game tasks players with managing their bunkers by venturing out above ground with Proxy avatars, exploring the wilderness, gathering a wide range of resources, and traveling the land in search of new adventures.

The game's vast open-world is fraught with dangers, requiring players to skillfully manage their Proxy's energy, repair damage, and adapt by combining human and alien technologies for vital upgrades. Central to the gameplay is the balance between solo exploration and collaborating with other players to enhance survival chances, making strategic decisions that impact the community and push back against the alien threat.
